Outlook

At the moment we see a natural succession, which is untypical for forests, but could also be a first step towards a forest of natural regeneration. The partly dense stand of Sambucus, Rubus and Crataegus on the calamity areas creates a first shelter for further development. If Pyrus, Tilia, and Acer species are already rejuvenating in similar areas nearby, the potential exists for further spread via natural succession. Whether climatic development will allow natural reforestation remains unclear. Due to the climate change, we must expect an extremely dynamic development of climatic circumstances in the future with a fundamentally hotter and drier climate. This does not allow a concrete forecast of future development. However, it can be stated that our forests have now arrived at an epoch with considerably more difficult growing conditions, in which it makes sense to design forests free of economic interests, with the sole focus on survivability. The forest areas of the National Park are an interesting and important example area to monitor the succession without active management (clearing, planting, ...).
